What Is Yoga?
Yoga, which literally means “to yoke”, or “the act of yoking or harnessing”, from a root yuj in Sanskrit, dates back more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, the desire for greater personal freedom, health and long life, and heightened self-understanding gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has since spread throughout the world. Most yoga practices in the West today focus on the physical postures called “asanas,” breathing exercises called “pranayama,” and meditation.
Who Can Practice Yoga?
Yoga suitable for adults of any age or physical condition. You can start at 18, 30 or 60 years of age, and can continue until you’re 100 years old or more! Advise your teacher of any health concerns before class. Our teachers are trained to modify and suggest alternative strategies or postures to enable you to practice safely and intelligently.
Is Yoga A Religion?
Yoga is not a religion. It sometimes interweaves religious philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but it is not necessary to study religion in order to practice yoga. We welcome students of all religious backgrounds!
What Should I Bring To Class?
You should bring a pair of sweats, leggings or shorts, and a t-shirt or tank top, and are welcome to change in our locker rooms!* No special footwear is needed, since you will be barefoot. Avoid wearing perfume or cologne, as others may have allergic reactions to fragrances. We provide blocks, blankets and straps as well as yoga mats and towels for rent.
*We ask that you wear a shirt with sleeves and long shorts or pants for Unnata® Aerial Yoga to prevent chaffing and preserve our aerial silks. Also, be aware that baggy or loose clothing may get shifted around and out of place, especially when upside down.
What Should I Eat Before Class?
Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. We suggest waiting at least two hours after a heavy meal and one hour after a light snack before taking class.
When Should I Arrive To Class?
Be mindful of teacher and other students and be on time. Arrive at least 15 minutes before class is scheduled to allow time to register at the front desk, change for class and ensure space in the classroom. You may be turned away if you arrive after class begins.
